Bullet-proof deployment for USB drive apps

Run applications directly from USB smart drives without installation, modifying the host computer, or the need for administrator rights.

Flash memory devices are enabling a new generation of exciting applications for consumers and business users alike. Carrying files and music are easy, however running ‘portable’ applications directly from USB drives can pose complications as well as security risks.  For example, if a program requires administrative permissions to run, and the computer is locked down to changes, the USB application will not run properly. Conversely, changing registry keys and installing files may be just as damaging to the host computer.

Thinstall USB applicaitons

Thinstall solves these challenges by providing a secure, isolated sandbox for applications to run directly from the USB drive:

  • Run applications on locked down machines. Thinstall enables applications to run without installation or system changes on Guest and Restricted User accounts.  The application is ‘packaged’ into a single EXE that contains the application and the Thinstall Virtual Operating System (VOS - the virtual registry and file system). No administrator privileges are required because the VOS runs the application in isolation.
  • Easily ‘convert’ a desktop application to a USB application. By packaging with Thinstall, the application has all files, libraries, components, and data that it needs to run, in a single EXE.
  • Avoid host computer modifications. Running a USB application may require registry and file system changes which could alter the stability of the host computer. The Thinstall VOS enables applications to run in a secure sandbox which means no changes to the computer OS  - and the USB application runs flawlessly.

Because Thinstall executes in user mode and does not install any software or devices drivers, users can access all of their applications on locked-down desktops without circumventing local security policies.
