Features and Benefits

The Thinstall Platform contains the Virtual OS which consists of the virtual registry and filesystem, a packaging GUI, and a runtime logging component.

Thinstall Virtual Operating System (VOS)

The Thinstall Virtual OS is the run-time component that is packaged with a virtualized, isolated application which allows it to run without requiring modifications to the host PC. When the application is running, virtual files and registry keys will override system files and registry keys where they might collide, otherwise the application can access any system files and registry keys it normally could.  The Thinstall Virtual OS consists of the virtual file system and virtual registry. It is lightweight – takes up approximately 300K of disk space and about 1 MB RAM.   An Thinstall created EXEs contain the Virtual OS along with the application EXE, DLLs, data files, and registry keys packaged into a single compressed EXE. Thinstall does not install any drivers, plug-ins, or otherwise require Administrator access.

Application Package Creation

Thinstall packages an application and all of the files it uses into a single executable that can be run without installation. Thinstall Studio consists of:

  • GUI which can be used to add virtual files and virtual registry scripts
  • Registry recording tools to automatically determine required registry keys for COM/ActiveX controls
  • Command-line packager that can be used to automate package creation
  • Runtime logging component which is used to display application activity include all Win32 API calls, the ability to highlight error conditions, obtains a list of files and registry keys used, and troubleshoot 3rd party applications and DLLs without source code.

Software Licensing

A wide range of licensing options provides for flexibility and control:

  • Expiration timeframe
  • Lock software to PC, Ethernet MAC address, hard drive, computer and more
  • Command line key generator
  • Programming API
  • Various key generation options for expiration by date, number of executions, time period and more.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics

Thinstall makes troubleshooting easy.  A Log Monitor enables the logging of all files, registry keys, COM/ActiveX controls used by an application and logs potential errors and missing files.  A complete trace of the application shows every Windows API call made.

Installation Features

The core Thinstall technology eliminates registry and file system changes with the virtual machine, yet installation of the application can be granularly controlled. StartMenu and Desktop Shortcuts can be added, install paths can be controlled or set by user, and automatic launch can be set. Upgrades can be controlled.
