Virtual streaming centralizes and archives software, preparing it for immediate use.

By now you have no doubt heard about virtualization. VARs can extend this concept further with a new twist called virtual application streaming.  The idea is simple: Send all the bits that are needed for running one application to a user's desktop at the moment they are needed, similar to how a video or music file is streamed when requested from a server. Rather than install the application, take up disk space and consume software licenses, you keep the applications centralized and archived, ready to be used when needed. "What VMware does for operating systems, we do for applications," said Henrik Rosendahl, CEO of Thinstall, in San Francisco. >more

Thinstall’s virtualization suite is worth learning about - August 2007

Thinstall’s technology allows a Windows application (Windows NT up to Windows Vista) to be processed into an executable file that sees its own version of the Windows registry, filesystem and data link libraries (DLLs). So, previously incompatible applications can reside on the same system without conflict. These applications can be copied to a target system using a file transfer utility, downloaded from a Website or downloaded from any ol’ SMB file server. >more

What started as a quick fix for incompatibility issues has become a viable alternative app-deployment model - August 2007

Application virtualization products from Thinstall isolate programs from the host operating system by confining the app and its requisite DLLs and registry keys to a self-contained package. A virtualized app doesn't clash with installed programs because it's essentially sealed inside a bubble. >more

Application virtualization technology enables organizations to run applications from a central location rather than on a user’s endpoint device - July 2007

Another method used by companies such as Thinstall takes application software and compresses it into a single executable file. With this technology users can run their applications from a USB stick on their laptop or desktop, or they could pull these executables down from a Local Area Network (LAN) server. There may be an agent that allows the client device to communicate with the server, but there is no local installation of the software. >more

Jonathan Clark, founder, president and chief technology officer of Thinstall, a San Francisco-based maker of application virtualization technology, agreed. "The way we see it, [virtualization] is the ability to package up an environment into an isolated area," Clark said.
